Belgium"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our pre-trip begins in the capital city of the United Kingdom, London &#8211; London is one of the largest cities in the world with a population of\u00a08,787,892<em> (Toronto, Canada&#8217;s most populous city, has\u00a02,731,571)!\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>So basically London offers pretty much anything you could imagine!\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a list of the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.planetware.com\/tourist-attractions-\/london-eng-l-lon.htm\">Top 17 Things to Do in London<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"648\" height=\"365\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/45ETZ1xvHS0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Our London experience actually begins in a little piece of Scouting heaven, Gillwell Park.\u00a0 Gillwell Park was the home of Lord Baden-Powell and is now the headquarters for the UK Scout Association as well as home to a HUGE adventure camp!\u00a0 Activities at Gillwell Park include grass sledging, sailing, bell boats, aeroball, revolving climbing wall, go-karts, kayaking, standard climbing wall, low ropes, rafting, canoeing, adventure course, crate stacking, archery, Jacob&#8217;s ladder, leap of faith, and an insane looking 3-G swing.\u00a0 Needless to say, there is LOTS to do in Gillwell Park!<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"648\" height=\"365\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cAFmJrpiX90?start=35&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 172px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/3\/31\/Scout_stone_Brownsea.jpg\" width=\"162\" height=\"497\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Location of the first Scout Camp!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While we&#8217;re in England we&#8217;ll take the train for a day trip to the South coast and visit Brown Sea Island.\u00a0 Brown Sea Island is the location of the first ever Scout Camp.\u00a0 Back in 1907 a visionary took a group of kids out to camp on a beautiful island off the coast of England, and from that simple act the world&#8217;s largest peace movement began.\u00a0 Scouting now thrives in almost every country in the world, and it all started on Brown Sea Island.\u00a0 A highlight will be visiting the exact spot of the first ever Scout campfire \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 262px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/belnuc.be\/sites\/default\/files\/Ghent%20-%20foto%20voor%20Belnuc%202.jpg\" width=\"252\" height=\"94\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ghent, Belgium<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After four days in the United Kingdom we&#8217;ll board a ferry bound for Dunkirk, France.\u00a0 \u00a0 Dunkirk was the location of the final desperate evacuation of the British and Allied forces in the early days of World War II as Hitler swept through Western Europe.<\/p>\n<p>From Dunkirk we&#8217;ll take the train into Ghent, Belgium where we will stay at a local Scout Camp for two nights.\u00a0 Ghent was established around 650 AD <em>(yup, well over a thousand years ago)<\/em> and grew to be one of the largest and wealthiest cities in Northern Europe during the middle ages.\u00a0 Today Ghent is a very popular tourist destination as it has maintained a lot of its medieval charm.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_115\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gfwscouting.ca\/adventure\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/386.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-115\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-115\" src=\"http:\/\/gfwscouting.ca\/adventure\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/386-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gfwscouting.ca\/adventure\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/386-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gfwscouting.ca\/adventure\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/386-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gfwscouting.ca\/adventure\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/386-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-115\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ypres from Cloth Hall<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While in Belgium we&#8217;ll take a day trip to Ypres, Belgium.\u00a0 Ypres was literally reduced to mud in the first World War &#8211; over 1.5 million people died on both sides to advance the front just five kilometers; truly incredible to think of the scope of loss.\u00a0 The battle of Ypres is perhaps the bloodiest and most tragic battle in human history.\u00a0 To this day the Belgians stop traffic at the Menin Gate in Ypres and perform the \u201cLast Post\u201d ceremony to honour those who died so they could be free \u2013 we will be there to see the ceremony first hand.\u00a0 They have done this every single day for nearly 100 years!\u00a0 <em>(except when the Nazi\u2019s occupied Belgium during WWII)<\/em>.\u00a0 Our Scouts &amp; Venturer Scouts had the privilege of visiting the Menin Gate in 2015, and it was by far one of the highlights of the trip.\u00a0 You will simply never forget the power of being there, and the depth of gratitude the Belgians have for the sacrifice of Canadians and Allied troops.<\/p>\n<p>We could even lay a wreath on behalf of the Newfoundlanders that fought and died at Ypres and in Passchendaele.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"648\" height=\"365\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nACpXZyHOA8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay;
